Ocean Health XPRIZE on Eagle Eye Networks Security Camera system

Jyotika Virmani, Technical Director, Ocean Health XPRIZE

Transcript

We’re using the Eagle Eye Networks cloud security camera system to secure and monitor our $2M Wendy Schmidt Ocean Health XPRIZE competition. The competition is to innovate accurate, durable and affordable PH sensors for the ocean. This will address the grand challenge for the lack of data on our ocean environment, in particular ocean acidification.

The first test phase of our competition is in a seawater tank at the Monterey Bay aquarium research institute. The institute placed two cameras above the tank, one facing in each direction, and a third camera was placed underground, looking through one of the tanks plexiglass windows, so that we could see through the water to our sensors.

Because the tests are in a remote location, I find it reassuring to be able to check and see for myself what’s going on. It’s really easy to use the mobile application as well, so I can see from anywhere.

I was really surprised and impressed with the clarity of the camera that is looking through the water. Especially as we are looking through about 40 feet of ocean water at the sensors.

I call it my sensor garden.

I also appreciate the ease with which I can use the EE system, because it has a time and motion monitor, so I can access any segment of the video I need to review what happened on a particular day.

We are really happy with the Eagle Eye Networks system. In fact, we are taking it with us to our next ocean test phase in Seattle.
