California Firearms Dealer Surveillance Law

California firearms dealers can meet new surveillance requirements using their existing security cameras and infrastructure with a cloud-based surveillance system from Eagle Eye Networks.

CA Firearms Dealer Requirements

A new California law – SB-1384 – will require licensed firearms dealers to record and save all video surveillance for one year beginning on Jan. 1, 2024. The law requires that surveillance systems must continuously record 24 hours a day. It also specifies where to place surveillance cameras:

  • Interior views of all entries and exits.
  • All areas where firearms are displayed.
  • All points of sale with the ability to identify the parties involved in a transaction.

Businesses will also be required to display signs at each entrance that read, “These premises are under video and audio surveillance. Your image and conversations may be recorded.”

This new law goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2024, giving firearm dealers one year to find a surveillance system that complies with new state requirements.

Affordable Video Surveillance System

Store owners can easily add one year of surveillance video and audio retention in the cloud with Eagle Eye Networks Cloud VMS (Video Management System).

California law requires new surveillance measures for firearms dealers

Eagle Eye Networks, the global leader in cloud video surveillance, allows businesses to move to a cloud video management system (VMS) without ripping and replacing existing camera infrastructure. This open and compatible cloud-based surveillance system is an affordable solution for firearm dealers looking to meet the new California surveillance laws.

Eagle Eye Networks supports thousands of camera makes and models, including analog cameras, to allow gun store owners to use their existing cameras and choose any new cameras that best suit their needs and budget.

Additionally, with a cloud video surveillance system from Eagle Eye, there is minimal upfront investment, no required on-site video recorder, and flexible monthly or yearly billing options.

Cloud video surveillance offers California businesses competitive comparative pricing to on-premise systems when considering the video storage requirements of SB-1384. With a cloud-based recording subscription, the customer only pays for what they use, and will never have to invest in more storage equipment if their system expands. Customers determine the resolution and retention on a camera-by-camera basis and can make changes as needed at any time.

The new law also requires that dealers retain audio from any interior camera. Eagle Eye allows customers to enable storage of audio from any surveillance camera that includes a microphone with no additional cost.

Secure Surveillance Storage With Easy Access

Encrypted surveillance video is securely stored by Eagle Eye Networks with triple redundancy on our global network of cloud data centers. Because Eagle Eye owns and operates the data centers we are better able to control cost. In 2024 Eagle Eye even lowered the cost of some long-term retention, higher resolution camera recording subscriptions.

Remote access is yet another differentiator for cloud surveillance systems. VMS system users and managers can access video from any camera and location at any time, from anywhere. Eagle Eye Networks makes it easy to find and share specific videos with Smart Video Search, an award-winning feature that is free and available to all Eagle Eye customers. Use artificial intelligence to search your surveillance video the same way you search the web for people, vehicles, or objects.
