There are a variety of surveillance solutions, one of the most proven is the video surveillance. The system offers and cameras are versatile, but the basic guidelines are the same for everyone. The technology is evolving towards cloud-based surveillance solutions. At Security Expo 2019, Eagle Eye Networks’ presentation compared some of the aspects of video surveillance camera systems and demonstrated the benefits of cloud solutions.

DSGVO guidelines

The DSGVO prescribes some security measures in the case of systematic and comprehensive video surveillance of publicly accessible areas.

  • Systematic description of planned processing operations and purposes of processing
  • Assess the necessity and proportionality of processing operations in terms of purpose
  • Risk assessment for the rights and freedoms of data subjects
  • Planned remedies to deal with the risks

Therefore, for the storage of video data (subject to the DSGVO user preference):

  • The storage or use is permitted if it is necessary to achieve the intended purpose, and there is no indication that the interests of the data subject are worthy of protection.
  • For another purpose, the controller may only process it further, as necessary, to ward off threats to public and public security and to prosecute criminal offenses.
  • The data are to be deleted immediately if they are no longer necessary in order to achieve the purpose or if protected interests of the data subject prevent further storage.

VSaaS

VSaaS (Video Surveillance as a Service) refers to hosted cloud-based video surveillance. The service includes video recording, storage, remote viewing, management notifications, web security and much more. Meanwhile, 93 percent of companies have introduced cloud solutions.

VSaaS and traditional camera systems in comparison

system installation

Internet-connected traditional DVR / NVR / VMS

Using a conventional system is a long, complex process. You must install the operating system software, configure your router, set up storage servers, configure your cameras, and install the application software.

Cloud-based VMS / VSaaS

A cloud-based system has an on-demand deployment. You connect the on-site device (bridge) and can automatically configure your cameras.

system support

Internet-connected traditional DVR / NVR / VMS

It’s an intense process to support and maintain on-site hardware and software, firmware, and configuration updates that must be done manually.

Cloud-based VMS / VSaaS

Because the computationally intensive hardware and software are in the “cloud,” and the cameras are connected to the cloud-based VMS only through the on-premises device (bridge), the off-site support is provided by the vendor…
