Vertical Market Highlight: Retail

February 24, 2016 Hans Kahler

With retailers losing billions of dollars a year due to shoplifting and internal theft, finding the best loss prevention methods has become a major priority for the retail industry. In fact, in 2014, over $40 billion of losses were attributed to inventory shrink.

According to the National Retail Federation, there are currently 3,794,621 retail establishments in the United States. This is presents a huge opportunity for security integrators, especially those who specialize in video surveillance.

Problem:
A store manager needs to be able to monitor the store 24/7.

Solution:
A cloud VMS with dedicated mobile applications means a store manager can view the cameras anytime, anywhere.

Problem:
The store needs more cameras.

Solution:
It’s important to get a system that is scaleable, no matter how many cameras are eventually added. A system that supports both IP and analog system also means that there’s no need to replace those analog cameras.

Problem:
The store is losing inventory – by both shoplifting and employee theft.

Solution:
Having a video surveillance system in itself is a deterrent for theft, especially internal ones. Beyond that, video surveillance means you can catch shoplifters and better prepare your store against future crimes.

Security is a major challenge at retail stores but some common places to place cameras include entrances and exits, cash registers, sales floor, and the parking lot. This means multiple cameras for each retail store – which means that there is a lot to keep an eye on. Having organizable layouts and remote viewing via mobile applications is very important for the management of a store. Additionally, granular user permissions means that the store manager and security can work together to keep the store as secure as possible.

Having video surveillance at a retail store is important because it can be used for:

  • Theft/Crime Detection
  • Vandalism Reduction
  • Crime Deterrence
  • Workplace Safety
  • Insurance Discounts
  • Operational Efficiency
