Data in the Cloud: Safer Than Ever?

Some criticize video data in the cloud as insecure, others are firmly convinced and develop new business models. Eagle Eye Networks believes in using the Cloud Video Surveillance. According to Rishi Lodhia, data in the cloud is not only secure, but also simplifies existing and opens up new application possibilities. Rishi Lodhia is considered one of the pioneers of cloud-based video surveillance. With his former company Cameramanager he developed the first camera with direct connection to the cloud.

How do you explain skepticism on the one hand, how euphoria is on the other? PROTECTOR talked to Rishi Lodhia, Managing Director EMEA of Eagle Eye Networks.

PROTECTOR: Mr. Lodhia, the trend to move video surveillance to the cloud continues. What are the opportunities offered by technology in the industry and how do you assess potential risks?

Rishi Lodhia:Like many other industries, the security industry is changing at a rapid pace. The telecom and IT sector has switched to cloud solutions in just a few years. I’ve been working on cloud based video surveillance for a long time, and lately there has been a lot of interest in it. I think, first and foremost, because customers are asking more and more, because virtually all other of their business applications are already in the cloud. Whether it’s a retail, a school, or a hospitality business, more and more business applications are being moved to the cloud, eventually raising the question: if I have my CRM with all my customer data in the cloud or my HR processes with all my employee data in the cloud,

Data security in the cloud is often discussed. I think we see another trend in the security industry where physical security and the IT security industry are converging. When we explain our solution to IT security experts, they immediately understand what it’s about and recognize the opportunity it offers to do business with it. They understand the concept of software as a service and firewalls, they know that the cameras are connected to the cloud via secure encryption, and that it is almost impossible to penetrate the general corporate network. However, the IT world still needs to learn what video surveillance cameras can do and where they should be installed for what purpose.

The security industry, on the other hand, knows everything about cameras, but has to be informed about the benefits of the cloud in terms of security, the importance of having no software to install and maintain, the user management and thus the user audits in a cloud solution simple and that cameras can pose a threat to a company’s network unless the right action is taken.

But if you declare that video sharing is as easy as releasing a USB stick to download videos, you’ll be surprised. And if you can also reset cameras directly from the platform, saving costs and resources, they are also convinced. Our cloud service is also compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (DSGVO) and a local solution will have difficulty reaching this level without high ongoing investment.

Eagle Eye Networks has set itself the goal of turning security cameras into smart business tools. How do you want to achieve this?

Video analysis and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are the current buzzwords in the industry. But we’re more focused on making sure we get more out of the video footage we already have. Let me give an example that has nothing to do with analysis: In a traditional Digital Video Recorder (DVR) solution, if you want to download a specific part of the video, you often need to go into the DVR with a USB device and Download the material before releasing it. But in a cloud solution, you can just pick a clipping and share the link with someone and say, Hey, look at that, maybe we should change the process at our box office because it looks like it’s too long at the moment take. So, as a company, you learn

In your opinion, how will the security technology industry continue to change in the coming years?

In the coming years, end users will increasingly focus on the cybersecurity part of their solution as digital hacks continue to take place. This increased awareness and demand for secure and flexible solutions will further increase the interest and demand for cloud solutions.

As networking grows, so does the danger of cyberattacks. Do you see it as a manufacturer as your task to take appropriate measures against it? Or is that the responsibility of the user?

I am glad that you ask this question. The biggest distinction between cloud and on-site systems is cyber security responsibility. For the end user, not only is it costly, but it’s almost impossible to oversee the protective measures against all forms of malware worldwide. Of course, it is absolutely the responsibility of the manufacturer to best protect the end user from IT attacks. But only a cloud service provider can respond quickly enough to update protection in the system.

How do you protect your network from potential IT attacks?

Eagle Eye Networks uses its “Camera Cyber Lockdown” technology to protect the customer’s premises and our data centers from malware and live attacks. Eagle Eye Networks camera-based functionality based on this technology secures the communication of video and system data by bundling information and using certified keys to unlock the packets at both ends.

How do you generally assess the problem of system security in security technology in the context of digitization?

Strong authentication and encryption technologies have enabled technology companies to more easily overcome the digital security gap. However, the “problem” in our security industry today is that too few companies have adopted and adopted the use of such cyber-security measures in the products – unless the majority of video system manufacturers use firewall and encryption technologies, the perception that shifting the physical security industry to IP poses a risk.
